Prostate
Cancer Prevention Trial
In theory, the drug Proscar (finasteride) might prevent prostate
cancer. There is a study underway to determine this. The study is
called the “Prostate Cancer Prevention Trial.” In the study: 18,000
healthy men have been randomized to take either finasteride or a
placebo. Finasteride produces hormone deprivation to the prostate
by lowering the amount of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) that can be formed
in the prostate. The National Cancer Institute is behind this large
study of volunteers to see if 5 mg/day of Proscar can prevent the
formation of prostate cancer in men over a 10-year period. The study
will reach its endpoint in 2004.
