Prostatitis Definition
Prostatitis means inflammation of the prostate.
You can also think of it as swelling of the prostate. The inflammation,
or swelling, is caused by white blood cells that are entering the prostate
in response to something.
Exactly what the white blood cells are
responding to is considered controversial.
We know with certainty that acute prostatitis
is often caused by infection.
The possible causes of chronic prostatitis
are infection, obstruction of the prostatic ducts, reflux of urine or
semen into the prostate, autoimmune disease, allergic reaction, neurologic
disease, muscular disease, trauma, or other causes. All these hypotheses
should be researched, and the first step in researching the cause of
disease is studying its pathology.
