How we made this site
Welcome to the Prostatitis Research Foundation. This website is devoted to helping raise private funds for prostatitis researchers around the world. Prostatitis research may help to prevent and cure chronic prostatitis, prostate enlargement (also called BPH for benign prostatic hyperplasia), and prostate cancer.

The overall goal of the Prostatitis Research Foundation is to see that prostatitis is cured. Prostatitis means inflammation of the prostate, and prostatitis causes dribbling after urination, waking at night to urinate, and can cause pelvic pain and other symptoms.

Another objective of the Prostatitis Research Foundation is to identify all the microbes of the human genitourinary tract whether they be disease-causing pathogens or normal flora. This can be achieved using new DNA technology, which allows the rapid identification of all viruses, bacteria, and parasites within bodily fluids. Urine, semen, prostatic fluid, and vaginal secretions will all be examined for microbes.
There are a slew of genitourinary diseases which have unknown causes. We first became aware of this while working on chronic prostatitis, which remains an inflammatory disease of unknown etiology in over 95% of cases. Chronic prostatitis affects 10 – 14% of the adult male population worldwide. Prostatitis causes waking at night to urinate, dribbling after urination, and other symptoms commonly dismissed as “normal” disturbances of aging. Prostatitis can also be a horrific and disabling disease causing pain, infertility, and sexual dysfunction. Traditional sexually transmitted diseases cause a small percentage of all cases of prostatitis. Recent research suggests that prostatitis, caused by a previously unidentified infection, may be the trigger for prostate cancer.
Interstitial cystitis (IC) is a similar disease of unknown etiology, but predominates in women. It results in urinary frequency, difficulty with urination, pain after sexual intercourse, and pelvic or lower abdominal pain. Like prostatitis, interstitial cystitis is a disease of unknown cause, and, is often unrecognized and chronic.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) remains a worldwide epidemic, being one of the most common infections of childhood, occurring in up to 20% of all adult women, and the incidence of UTI in men dramatically increases with age the prostate enlarges due to benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis. However, there are many other related diseases of the genitourinary system that are largely of unknown cause or can’t be rapidly diagnosed such as: epididymitis, orchitis, vaginitis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. These all need to be researched as well.
All the genitourinary diseases share two common problems: 1) their cause is often unknown, and 2) their cause, when known, often cannot be rapidly diagnosed. These diseases often become chronic and disabling simply because of the lack of a timely diagnosis.
We propose using new DNA technology, to completely delineate the flora of the human genitourinary tract. Using this same technology we will separate the flora into pathogens that cause disease, and microbes that are normal and beneficial. Finally, we will develop tests for rapid diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.
It’s clear that this goal can be achieved due to new technology that allows us to probe the DNA and RNA of microorganisms, both by type, and by quantity of the microorganism(s) present.
This research should improve the health of millions of people worldwide and prevent diseases from occurring in billions of people.
There are currently clinics, all around the world, serving patients with these diseases, staffed by physicians with special expertise in these areas, but with no money for research. The necessary samples are read

The Most Common Urinary Diseases in Men
Among men with genitourinary complaints, the three most common conditions are urethritis (which accounts for some 200,000 initial office visits each year), epididymitis (600,000 office visits), and prostatitis (approximately two million office visits for genitourinary symptoms--or one fourth of all such visits for men). This article is a review of diagnostic and management strategies for these commonly seen conditions.

Prostatitis Has No Celebrity Spokesperson
Prostatitis is said to afflict 10 to 14 percent of the adult male population, but the disease has no celebrity spokesperson. Prostatitis may be linked to prostate cancer.
